HumanizeMD Spotlight - David Colella, PT, DPT

db Orthopedic Physical Therapy

It was thirty years ago that I saw how people could live better lives physically, emotionally, and mentally, through the benefits of physical therapy. That’s because it was almost thirty years ago my mother received a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, an autoimmune disease that attacks the central nervous system. Over those years it was her access to physical therapy, which, despite the fact she had a chronic condition, enabled her to successfully raise my three older siblings and me in our Pompton Lakes, NJ home.

As a Boy Scout growing up, I worked very hard to become an Eagle Scout, one of the two personal achievements that make me very proud. Seven years later when I completed my Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Medicine & Dentistry/Rutgers School of Health Related Professions, I achieved my second. When I was in graduate school, I participated in several MS Mud Runs to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

I regularly attend continuing education courses to learn new techniques and procedures that may help my patients recover faster. I recently was certified in functional dry needling, a highly skilled technique used by physical therapists, which has been a great asset treating muscle pain in my patients.

After a day at work, you might find me meditating to clear my mind, practicing a Mountain Pose in a hot yoga class, or using my knot tying skills I learned as a Boy Scout to hang a hammock so that my wife and I can relax or take a nap under an old oak tree.
