HumanizeMD Spotlight - Stephen McManus, M.D., DABR
Atlantic Medical Imaging
As a starry-eyed child growing up in Philadelphia, I wanted to be an astronaut, but as a volunteer in the emergency room of my local hospital, I saw how impactful physicians are, right here on earth. That’s why I decided to be a doctor. After realizing I wanted to become a doctor, I focused all of my energy on getting into medical school. I loved the genuine people and vibrant neighborhoods of Philly so much that I remained in the City of Brotherly Love for my undergraduate and medical school training. It was a good thing I stayed local for medical school. If I had gone elsewhere, I would not have met my wife.
To stay current on radiology trends, I subscribe to professional continuing education material on twenty-six different topics – no wonder my mailman is in great shape. As for me, the secret to how I stay fit might very well be inside my office at Atlantic Medical Imaging. I use a tread desk, a treadmill built into the floor under my desk. Over the last four years, I’ve walked across the country without ever leaving my office!
While my most rewarding professional achievement was developing the Prostate MRI Program at Atlantic Medical Imaging, my most personally satisfying experience is my missionary work. Once a week, along with forty other Christian radiologists from all over the United States, I review CAT scan images uploaded over the internet from Tenwek Hospital, East Africa.
My wife and I love to dance. When we go to parties we dance the night away. I may have chosen being a doctor over soaring in a rocket ship past the stars, but who knows – maybe one day I’ll be on the TV show, Dancing with the Stars!
