Koi Sushi & Hibachi in Hazlet goes beyond what you’d normally expect from a Japanese restaurant to provide you with a memorable dining experience.


Owner Jackie Chan, a third-generation chef and restaurateur, wouldn’t want it any other way.


Jackie and his wife renovated the restaurant when they took it over and opened in August of 2015. Over the last year and a half, they’ve built a loyal following by offering tasty, creative dishes at affordable prices. As Koi has seen its customer base grow since it opened, Jackie enjoys knowing that he can provide the surrounding community with a terrific afternoon or night out.


“I enjoy cooking and making new dishes a lot,” Jackie says. “The satisfaction you get when you make something for a customer to eat, and they are satisfied with the meal and the service, is something that really touches your heart.”


In designing the restaurant, Jackie and his wife crafted an elegant yet casual ambiance with a blend of earthy tones. The booths in the seating area are partitioned off from the rest of the dining space by real sticks of bamboo that stretch toward the ceiling, giving the restaurant an authentic and uniquely Japanese feel. At the sushi bar, where patrons can watch the chefs prepare their meals, a nearby wooden wall with a torched façade that highlights the wood’s grain and texture accents the accompanying dining space.


The same creativity is reflected in the menu, where some of the signature dishes that Jackie has designed include a Sushi Nacho appetizer with tuna, salmon and avocado on top of a crispy wonton skin, and Basil Tempura, with spicy tuna and crabmeat on a tempura basil leaf.


With dozens of special rolls to complement traditional rice, noodles, pad Thai, curry, and other entrées, Koi’s regular lunch, dinner and sushi menu has enough diversity to tempt you into ordering seconds or to come back for more. And most of the local community has been doing just that, as reservations are recommended, especially on the weekends. Also, don’t forget to ask about the chef’s special, as Koi regularly offers different types of wild fish shipped over from Japan.


If you’re in the mood for hibachi, Koi’s separate, private hibachi room is sure to satisfy your appetite for food and entertainment. Using fresh, never frozen meat, their hibachi chef with more than 20 years of experience will wow you with theatrics while cooking your food to perfection.

“Our menu can always be in your pocket on your phone,” Jackie says. “In the restaurant business, we want to offer our customers everything we can to make them happy, and giving them a chance to quickly get their food to go is another way of doing that.”
